Endless Options

Custom products are amazing tools. TYD understands that there are a lot of options for both the muzzles as well as leashes and long lines. The hope is that this guide page can help you decide what you and your dog needs in a custom item.

Biothane Muzzles

Forehead Strap

Forehead straps are a removeable strap that runs between the dog's eyes connecting the top of the muzzle to the muzzle collar strap. The point of this extra strap is to prevent dogs from pulling the muzzle off over their noses. This is especially important for dogs with short noses or dogs that aren't 100% reliable when wearing their muzzles. Some of this pulling the muzzle off can be helped by Conditioning your dog to wear the muzzle comfortably but not always.

Treat Hole

The treat hole is a space that is created in the front of the muzzle to allow for easier access to treats or scavenging. The treat hole in the Biothane muzzle is about 5/8" wide and 1.25" tall. The treat hole does not change the bite protection of the muzzle but can increase the liklihood of scavenging small items.

Quick Release Plastic vs. Metal

TYD uses side release quick release buckles on all of it's muzzles. You have the option to choose between plastic or metal for the material that the buckle is made of. This is usually a personal preference choice.

Extra Screws

When you receive your muzzle you will likely need to adjust it so it fits your dog appropriately. All of the adjustable straps are secured with flat backed Chicago screws. The screws will occasionally unscrew themselves when the muzzle is worn and fall out becoming lost in whatever environment you're in.

TYD does include one extra screw in the case one is lost as well as an individual use super glue packet to secure screws once the muzzle is adjusted as desired. However, you may choose to wait to glue your screws and an extra set of 5 screws would be recommended to replace lost screws.

An alternative to using the super glue right away would be to double one strap up so you have a triple layer of Biothane to add some friction to the screw so it's not as likely to fall out.

Rush Orders

Custom muzzles can take up to 12 weeks to complete an order depending on how busy we are. That said, turn around times are generally around 5-7 weeks but can vary. If you have a timeline you need to stick to you can pay to rush your order cutting the line and get your custom order within 2-3 weeks.

Photo Submissions

As a part of the custom order making process TYD looks over photos of EVERY dog to help prevent measurement mistakes and costly resizing. TYD asks for photo submissions of measurements taken. You can submit your photos HERE. There is a photo at the bottom of the form showing an example of the 3 most important measurements to show.

***If you can not get photos of your measurements that's okay. TYD understands that this is sometimes a monumental task and requests photos of your dog's profile while panting. If you can get a photo of your dog's profile in a current muzzle as well and can include the brand and size or measurements from the muzzle this is also helpful.

Nose Type

You can choose from 3 different Nose types:

Open nose has two straps that go off to either side of the dog's nose. This helps to relieve pressure from the top of the muzzle as well as improve airflow AND allow for treat delivery from the top of the muzzle. The open nose does not compromise bite resistance but can create a scoop that some dogs will use to eat sand and other debris.

Regular Nose has two straps that go straight up and over a dog's nose and attach to the top of the muzzle. This style helps to keep large debris out of the muzzle.

Closed Nose has two straps that go straight up and over a dog's nose and attach to the top of the muzzle AND an additional horizontal strap that closes off extra gaps on the top of the muzzle keeping smaller debris out of the muzzle.

There are photos of each of these options on the Biothane Order Page

Safety Straps

Safety Straps refer to the smaller distance between the front straps and the side straps. Usually, the distance between straps is 3/8" in front of the muzzle and 1/2" on the sides. In some cases having the straps closer together help to keep smaller debris out of the muzzle and out of the dog's mouth too. When safety straps are ordered straps are placed 1/8" apart from each other leaving space for air and water to enter and exit the muzzle but not smaller items such as rocks or pebbles.

BLING!

Adding bling to a custom muzzle is a completely cosmetic and personal choice. You can choose rhinestones, hearts or stars to add to your fashionista's muzzle.

If you have particular preferences as to which color rhinestones, hearts or stars please make a note of it in the comments box allowed. :-)

Colors

You can choose from 32 different colors of Biothane. There is a color photo included on the order page but please note that the photo isn't completely representative of the exact colors.

Color check box selection is limited to 3 choices but if you'd like to add more colors or stick to a particular theme please make a note of that theme and include a photo if helpful in your photo submissions.

Metal Type

TYD offers 3 different options for rivet color:

Silver is standard and will be default if the choice is left blank

Black is very sassy and striking on all color combos

Brass is the only option that is RUST RESISTANT

Vinyl Muzzles

Forehead Strap

Forehead straps are a removeable strap that runs between the dog's eyes connecting the top of the muzzle to the muzzle collar strap. The point of this extra strap is to prevent dogs from pulling the muzzle off over their noses. This is especially important for dogs with short noses or dogs that aren't 100% reliable when wearing their muzzles. Some of this pulling the muzzle off can be helped by Conditioning your dog to wear the muzzle comfortably but not always.

Vinyl Material Information

The thickness of the vinyl is often predetermined by the circumference/height of the muzzle. If you would prefer a lighter vinyl for your muzzle than your dog measures into and forgo some bite protection you can request to do so.

  • Muzzle circumference less than 10" when panting) will have vinyl that is .059" thick.
  • Muzzle circumferences between 10-13" when panting will have vinyl that is .12" thick.
  • Muzzle circumferences between bigger than 13" when panting will have vinyl that is .18" thick.

Vinyl is BPA and Phthalate free and is rated to -30 Degrees F to prevent cold weather cracking.

Treat Hole

The treat hole is a larger hole that is created in the front of the muzzle to allow for easier access to treats or scavenging. The treat hole in the Vinyl muzzle is usually 1" in diameter compared to the 3/8" diameter ventilation holes. The treat hole does not change the bite protection of the muzzle but can increase the likelihood of scavenging small items.

By request we can add a lightweight flap to cover the treat hole but allow guardians to lift the flap to deliver treats. This flap will be removable as well.

Leashes and Long Lines

Length

Length of a leash or longline feels pretty self explanatory. The longer the leash or long line the more freedom the dog can have while on walks.

Longlines do get heaver as they get longer however so if you're looking for something that your dog can easily drag without getting tangled stick with a moderate length (under 30 feet)

Extra Add-Ons

Handle refers to the end of the leash or longline where there is usually a loop to hold on to. Some people prefer to leave the handle off to reduce drag and the chance that the longline will become tangled in brush or other obstacles (like in a nosework trial)

D-Ring on the Handle is a d-ring that is added at the base of the handle or if no handle is ordered just to the end of the long line or leash. Some people enjoy having a stationary attachment point for poop bag holders/keys/another leash/etc.

O-Ring on the Handle is an o-ring on the handle that is free floating. Again this can be used to secure keys, poop bags, another leash but is free floating.

Leash Width

Biothane comes in multiple widths! TYD generally makes leashes and long lines in 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 1" widths. It is possible to do a shorter leash or long line in 3/8" but it must be less than 25' in length - just make a comment in your order in the color comment box.

Static Break Strength:

  • 1/2" - 500 lbs
  • 5/8" - 625 lbs
  • 3/4" - 750 lbs
  • 1" - 1000 lbs

Dynamic Break Strength:

  • 1/2" - 100 lbs
  • 5/8" - 125 lbs
  • 3/4" - 150 lbs
  • 1" - 200 lbs

*** TYD does not generally keep longer lengths than 25' in 1" or 3/4" so these longlines or leashes may require a little longer turnaround time to source the straps.

Colors

You can choose from 32 different colors of Biothane. There is a color photo included on the order page but please note that the photo isn't completely representative of the exact colors.

Color check box selection is limited to 2 choices as it can be difficult to incorporate more colors into leashes and long lines.

Locking Carabiner

Some dogs have learned that if they roll they can unlock the snap on regular bolt snap leashes. You may opt to add a locking carabiner to the dog end of the leash or longline. The carabiners used have a swivel head so the leash/long line won't get spun up and are self locking so you don't have to remember to screw the locking mechanism into place.
